A Football Battle Worthy of the 'Heroic Age'!

A Football Battle Worthy of the 'Heroic Age'! The All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final on Sunday 23rd September 2012 promises to be a battle worthy of the ‘Heroic Age’.

Croke Park in Dublin sets the stage for Donegal and Mayo to engage in a battle to the end, reminiscent of the mythological ‘Ulster Cycle’ which depicts age-old encounters between the ‘Ulaid’ and the ‘Connachta’. It is the first time since 1948 that Gaelic Football teams representing the provinces of Connacht and Ulster will be competing for the Sam Maguire cup.

Now in its 125th year, the GAA All-Ireland Senior Football Championship has been strongly defended in the past by Kerry and Dublin, the two most successful teams in championship history. Mayo and Donegal have toiled their way to the top this year and the battle for the title will be fierce.

Mayo have held the title three times but last won in 1951, although they did reach the finals in 2006. They knocked out Dublin in the semi-finals to stake their well-deserved place in this All-Ireland Football Final. Donegal, who beat Kerry in the quarter-finals, have waited 20 years for a chance to reach this stage, their one and only win being in 1992.

Much is at stake for both sides. Mayo boss, James Horan, summed up the situation by saying of Donegal, “They are playing good football. I suppose so are we. It will be interesting. Two different styles. Donegal have beaten all before them ... as have we”.
